Crafty Baby and the Consumer Product Safety
Improvement Act (CPSIA)

For the protection of children, Congress passed a new law in August 2008 requiring domestic manufacturers and importers to certify that children's products made after February 10, 2009 meet the requirements of new safety, lead and phthalate standards. Crafty Baby supports the US efforts to ensure the safety of our children. While the details of the CPSIA are still being evaluated and reviewed, the testing requirements which have been imposed as a result of this new law are severe for small operations like ours.

At Crafty Baby, we are involved in every stage of development in our product line. Our products are created in home studios by our "mom" employees. Our attention to detail and the sturdy construction of our products has made us a favorite in this specialty market. We work hard to carefully choose components that are created with the same high standards we set for our product line. The fabrics we use, in fact, fabrics in general, are inherently lead-free.While we are confident that our products are safe for babies and children, we are working hard to comply with this legislation and understand exactly how it applies to our product line.

Crafty Baby has joined forces with the HandmadeToy Alliance (www.handmadetoyalliance.org) to ensure that the public will be served by the new safety laws without compromising small businesses like ours which produce handmade goods. Currently, the CPSC (U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission) is considering certain exemptions and standards in the law, including an allowance of component-based testing. Both synthetic and natural fabrics are being considered for exemption. In order to allow more time to clarify and properly implement the CPSIA, the CPSC has issued a one year stay of enforcement. We recognize that despite the stay, we are still required to comply with the law. To prove compliance, we utilized XRF scanning technology to certify that our line is below 20ppm (the standard being 300ppm as of 8/14/09) for lead. Feel free to click on the pdf's below to review our General Certificates of Conformity.

As parents ourselves, we take seriously the charge to certify the safety of our children's products. We are happy to answer any questions you may have about our products or sources and we remain committed to providing you with superior handmade goods. We have faith that common sense changes will be made to the CPSIA and that Crafty Baby will remain a favorite in your store.
